St. John's doesn't have curbside recycling! I was not too suprised when I found out there was no composting, but no recycling? I though everyone had made the change.

This weekend in Ottawa is the "The Guy Show" and next weekend is "The Women's Show". I don't really want to talk about the themes, activites or products at either show, I want to talk about the names.
Notices how it's "The Guy Show" and not "The Guy's Show", and it's not "The Woman Show", also notice how the alternatives sound weird. If you think it's because Guy reffers to a single man notice how "The Men's Show" sounds out of place as well.

| Desktops |
[13 Mar 2009|05:41pm] |
My desktops are both pictures I took, they both happen to be Cars.
Here is my home desktop.

Here is my work desktop:

You may notice the work desktop is really wide. This is because I have dual monitors. Setting up a single picture across two monitors takes a little trick. You need to crop the photo in the correct shape (10:4 for 2 standard monitors like mine) then resize it so that it is the same resolution (2560:1024 for mine) as the two monitors. After this is done in the desktop settings select the picture and TILE it as appose to centering or stretching it, other wise the picture will appear the same on both monitors.
Also the center of the photo is missing, that is another technique that makes the photo look better over two monitors. Delete the center of the picture that would be under the bezel of the monitor, it's a simple thing but it make the photo scan better.

People who drive SUVs have to remember that if thier back window is high off the ground they can't rely on it to tell if there is a car behind them. What if there is a car that is a pretty average sized car such as a Saturn Ion Quad Coupe? Well the answer is you are going to back into them and up onto thier hood!

I want a smart phone. I was all ready to get an iPhone, in fact if Fido had been able to switch my phone number from prepaid to a monthly contract I would have one. But I have been doing more research on the iPhone and there are a few major problems I have with it.
My nuber one problem is instant messaging (Gtalk). I didn't realize that the iPhone didn't allow 3rd party applications to run in the background, meaning no truely useable instant messanger could be made. I want to be online all the time and I want the phone to tell me when I get a message (even if it is locked).
Also copy and paste. Like, what the hell Apple?
My first alternative is the Blackberry Storm. It will let me run a gtalk client in the background. It also handels syncing with outlook (which I use) better than the iPhone. And it does copy and paste.
Next would be to wait for an Android phone. The downside to this being that there is no indication of when one will be available in Canada.
I have head little good about Windows mobile phones. Maybe you have one and really like it? Should I even bother looking at it.
Basically I want opinions. Also am I mistaken about any of the iPhones faults. The iPhone is definitly the most user friendly, and seems to have the nicest browser by far, It does most things better than the Storm probably will, but the Storm does everything.

Today at work we found an old Sonic Dismembrator!
That officially wins the award for coolest named tool!
We have been trying to come up with things to Dismembrate all morning.
Edit: Also found: boxes of hypodermic needles.

| Bicycles |
[23 Aug 2008|10:24pm] |
I bought a bike today. It is a used 2007 KHS Flight 220. It is dark gray. It is pretty awesome, I took it for a short ride tonight and it was a lot of fun, this bike is crazy fast. I sort of feel dumb for going 3 years in Toronto without a bike.
The next step is getting to the point where I can do the 15km commute to work. It may not sound that bad but I am very out of shape.
One other thing. This bike has STI shifters (the shifters that are integrated into the brake leaver) and OMG I could never go back! I have never been one for mountain bikes, this is my 3rd road bike and the one main complaint I have with old road bikes is the downtube shifter. I just didn't shift very much on my last bike, but not needing to move my hands means shifting all the time to keep myself in the best gear and makes riding so much easier (the bike also seems way lighter than my last bike).
There will be pictures soon.

A few months ago at my work signs were put up on the paper towel dispensers in the washroom that say:
"To help reduce paper towel waste we would ask you to limit your self to 1 or 2 pieces of paper towel"
This resulted in an immediate 40% reduction in the paper towel use at work.
Sometimes simple things can make big differences.
